A Forum on Inclusive Information, December 2003
From DISNNET Number 603 (disnetco@yahoo.com)
On December 10, and as part of the Contest on Journalism and Society for All, a group of participants organized a "Forum for Journalism, Universities and the Media against Social Exclusion". This activity was organized as a permanent space for sharing experiences and ideas, on human rights and the fundamental right to information, with journalists, universities and the media. More than 100 persons met for more than nine hours at the leading library (Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango) of Bogotá, where all had their opportunity of sharing and learning about information technology, the use of information tools, information policies, and ideological conflicting issues like disability and human rights, social inclusion, discrimination, and media coverage.
Journalist María Victoria Polanco presented documents corresponding to a sector wide consultation for the drafting of an inclusive communication policy. This forum included panels where with the participation of University deans, journalists, and users, expressed their concern on the reasons behind the exclusion of many sectors in society, particularly persons with disabilities from media, including the manipulation of facts and figures, which mitigate against inclusive information on the one hand, and, on the other, against the right to information for all.
Participants concluded to hold a similar Forum next December 10, 2003. Disnnet will soon publish the conclusions and recommendations, including the Proceedings of this important event. Please visit
