Kenyan Disability Groups Protest Neglect by Ruling Party
By Kay Schriner
The Disability Electoral Power (DEP), an umbrella organization of three Kenyan disability groups, is continuing its protests against the ruling Narc party's failure to nominate any individuals with disabilities for posts in the new ninth national Parliament.
DEP's chair, Wamunyi Chomba, has said that Narc's failure is a "disappointment and a betrayal of the highest order for President Kibaki to neglect the disabled people in his Cabinet." Chomba says that disabled Kenyans will demonstrate in the streets in the government does not address DEP's concerns.
Chomba says Narc's campaign slogan ("Narch yataumbua walemavu," meaning "Narc recognizes the disabled") was a hollow one, and leaves disabled citizens feeling blackmailed.
