The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Disability Studies
The Department of Disability and Human Development in the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences is inviting applications from qualified candidates in any relevant discipline for 1-2 year postdoctoral research training experiences in disability studies. Advanced research training is available in one or more of the following areas: Disability Definition, Disability Experiences, and Disability Services and Policy, under the mentorship of nationally and internationally recognized faculty members associated with the College's interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Disability Studies. Additional areas of faculty mentorship could include: disability history; access to health promotion; representation of disability in the media; disability, gender, and other social minority dimensions (race, ethnicity, sexuality, aging, class); disability technology; disability ethics; disability art; and community participation in research.
Disability research has been flawed by a lack of scholars trained to examine disability as a multi-layered phenomenon with complex social dynamics, particularly from the perspectives of disabled individuals. To realize the goals of progressive disability policy-- equal access to the community, empowerment, and self-determination -- future researchers and academicians must have awareness of the history, nature, consequences, and culture of disability. A central goal of this innovative postdoctoral training program is to prepare future scholars and researchers with a coherent, integrated, and in-depth knowledge of the multidimensional nature of disability. The program combines immediate immersion in an ongoing research program with a focused didactic experience addressing critical values, current issues, and innovative approaches in contemporary disability research.
Applicants must have received their doctoral degrees (PhD, MD, JD, etc.) within the past four years. The length of the fellowship experience will vary. Ordinarily, it will be for one to two years and stipends will be for at least $34,000 per annum, depending upon qualifications and experience. Applicants should submit a curriculum vita and three reference contacts. Copies of relevant publications and a brief statement of research experience and research goals must be provided for full consideration.
