Disabled Peruvians Protest, Celebrate

A public protest was organized in Lima in the summer of 2000 by the National Confederation of the Disabled of Peru (CONFENADIP). The protest was staged in order to celebrate the 19th anniversary of a historic event of singular importance: the march of thousands of people with disabilities to the Congress of the Republic to demand the creation of new disability laws, as called for by the Constitution. This time, the march was aimed at the dismissal due to incompetence of the principal workers of CONADIS, highest state authority on this issue, as well as the return of CEFODI (Center for Occupational Training for Disabled People) to management by CONFENADIP.

The march ended at the doors of PROMUDEH, the ministry in charge of managing this issue. Vice Minister William Toro received a commission of 15 people, agreeing to the creation of a commission headed by Minister Luisa Maria Cuculiza in order to dialogue and make agreements in order to solve proposed problems. Seven Peruvian newspapers picked up the story.
