International Conferences 2001-2002

Following is by no means a comprehensive list, just a selection of international disability-related conferences that DisabilityWorld staff found interesting.

2001

APRIL
World Health Organization Conference on "ReThinking Care," Oslo, Norway, April 22-25. This one is an invitation-only affair for approximately 100 participants, but is bound to have some reverberations as it seems to be the first WHO conference called to gather information and priorities primarily from people with disabilities. Towards a Barrier Free Europe, Linkoping, Sweden, April 25-26 and Disability Policy Planning in Europe, Linkoping, April 27-28. The Presidency of the European Union is rotated and during the 2001 term of the Swedish EU Presidency, several events and meetings will take place designed to clarify and provoke discussion about Swedish and European disability policies and initiatives. European Union Conference on Equal Opportunities in the Future Labor Market for Hard of Hearing and Deaf People, Uppsala, Sweden, June 6-8. Annual Conference of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA), Reno, Nevada, June 22-26. 9th International Conference on Mobility & Transport for Elderly and Disabled People, Warsaw, Poland, July 2-5. On theme Towards Safety, Independence & Security, conference will feature sessions on world perspectives on accessibility, situation in developing world, situation in eastern & central Europe, buses & trams, mobility & lifestyle, air transport, policies & standards, aids for visually impaired people, para-transit & taxis, accessibility of historical sites, and safety for wheelchair travelers. First World Congress of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Amsterdam, Holland, July 7-13. This new group is the result of a merger between the International Rehabilitation Medicine Association and the International Federation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Format will be daily morning keynotes followed by three speakers developing same theme; thematic paper sessions and free paper sessions twice a day; feature will be 14 young doctors from European countries presenting results of their research. 7th Vienna International Workshop on Functional Electrostimulation (FES), Vienna, Austria, September 12-15. FES is a rehabilitation technology that uses low-level electrical current, typically applied to the neuromuscular system with the aim of halting or reversing a disabling condition. First International Conference on Disability, Rehabilitation & Inclusion, Beirut, Lebanon, September 19-21. Sessions on human rights and disability legislation, disability research, use of media, health & prevention issues, role of disability NGOs, issues in education, accessibility of cities, information technology & disability, employment of women with disabilities, sports and leisure, roe of UN agencies in Third World disability issues, and vocational rehabilitation & employment in the new century. 2nd International Conference on Parents with Disabilities & their Families, Oakland, California, October 11-14.
