ICTA Global 2002
The ICTA Global 2002 meeting is now planned to be held in Osaka, Japan during October 2002 in conjuction with the RI Assembly and RI Executive Committee meeting on 16 and 17 October 2002.

An ICTA AP meeting and Seminar on Access and Technology are also planned in conjunction with the ICTA Global Osaka meeting.

Planning for the Osaka program will be further discussed at an ICTA Global meeting in March with ICTA Asia Pacific in Hong Kong.

International Symbols of accessibility
The ICTA August 2001 Discussion Paper including the proposed International Symbol of Mobility (ISM) has been discussed with ISO.

Access,signage and appropriate technology will be further considered at an ISO / TC 59 / SC 16 meeting scheduled in Brisbane, Australia on 16 March 2002.

ICTA Asia Pacific
The Campaign 2001 Conference was held in Hanoi 10 to 15 December 2001. Further information available from ICTA-AP

An ISO / TC 59 / SC 16 meeting is scheduled in Brisbane, Australia on 16 March 2002, to be chaired by Eduardo Alvarez, our ICTA Latin America Chair. Further information available from ICTA-LA.

The ICTA Global 2002 meeting, ICTA AP meeting and a Seminar on access and technology are planned for Osaka, Japan during October 2002 in conjuction with the RI Assembly.

An ICTA Asia Pacific meeting is scheduled in Hong Kong on 22 and 25 March 2002. Contact ICTA-AP as required.

Following the Hong Kong ICTA AP meeting a detailed Osaka program can be posted, including venue details, accommodation and related activities.

ICTA Europe and ICTA Latin America
The first meeting of the Technical Subcommittee on Accessibility of the International Organization for Standardization ISO / TC59 / Ad-hoc group (future ISO / TC59 / SC16) was held in AENOR, Madrid on 15 June 2001, and countries represented included Denmark, France, Israel, Japan, Norway, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Spain. The Chairman, Arch. Eduardo Alvarez, ICTA LA Chair, represented COPANT and UNIT.

The meeting decided to promote active e-mail participation, facilitate collaboration with less developed countries, minimizing expensive meeting attendance costs, and to seek financial support from DEVCO and other institutions. Adopted resolutions included:

ISO / TC59 / Ad-Hoc Group will exchange information by e-mail and members will contact different countries in Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia, etc to increase participation.

The new title for the Group is ISO / TC59 / SC16 "Accessibility and usability of the built environment".

Proposed new scope is: Requirements and guidelines for design, construction and management of accessibility and usability in new and existing built environments to be obstacle free and enable independent and safe use.

The second meeting of the ISO / TC59 / SC16 was held in AENOR Madrid, on 30 November 2001.

The 3rd ISO / TC59 / SC16 meeting "Accessibility and usability of the built environment" is scheduled in Brisbane, Australia on March 16, 2002.

La reunión de Constitución del Sub-comité sobre Accesibilidad de la Organización Internacional de Normalización ISO / TC 59 / Ad-hoc Group (futuro ISO / TC59 / SC16) se celebró en la sede de AENOR, en Madrid, España, el 15 de junio de 2001 y contó con la representación de diferentes países tales como: Dinamarca, Francia, Israel, Japón, Noruega, Reino Unido y Uruguay así como una amplia representación española. Su Presidente, Arq. Eduardo ALVAREZ, es representante de COPANT y UNIT.

Se decidió promover la participación activa, vía correo electrónico, con la finalidad de facilitar la colaboración a los países de pocos recursos, evitando así la costosa asistencia física a las reuniones y gestionar apoyo financiero en DEVCO y otras instituciones para ampliar la participación de países en desarrollo. Las resoluciones adoptadas incluyen:

El ISO / TC 59 / AD-HOC GROUP intercambiará información por correo electrónico y los miembros contactarán con los diferentes países de Asia, África, Norte y Sudamérica, Australia, etc., con la finalidad de aumentar la participación.

El nuevo título propuesto para el futuro ISO / TC59 / SC16 es: "Accesibilidad y adecuación para el uso del entorno construido".

La propuesta del objeto y campo de aplicación es: "Requisitos y guías para el diseño, construcción y gestión de la accesibilidad y adecuación para el uso del entorno construido, nuevo y existente, con el fin de eliminar las barreras y permitir su uso independiente y seguro"

La segunda reunión del ISO / TC59 / SC16 se realizó el 30 de noviembre de 2001 en AENOR, Madrid.

La tercera reunión del ISO / TC59 / SC16 "Accesibilidad y adecuación para el uso del entorno construido" está convocada en Brisbane, Australia el 16 de Marzo de 2002.

ICTA Europe and ICTA North America
The planned June 2002 Joint Meeting with Gladnet in Paris was cancelled.

ICTA Latin America
The World Committee on Disability has given Ecuador the "2001 Franklin D. Roosevelt International Disability Award", granted every year to countries with outstanding advances in the disability field. The ceremony will be held at the UN headquarters with the assistance of Ecuador's President, ambassadors and special guests.

The award consists of a statue of FDR, 50.000 US dollars and 1.000 wheelchairs, and recognizes the work done by CONADIS and his president, Mr. Rodrigo Crespo Toral. South Korea, Canada, Ireland, Hungary y Thailand have received the same recognition in previous years. Ecuador is the first Latin American country to receive the award.

El Premio Internacional de Discapacidad Franklin Delano Roosevelt 2001 ha sido conferido al Ecuador por el Comité Mundial de Discapacidad. El Premio, otorgado anualmente, fue creado en 1995 para los países que han hecho avances considerables en el campo de las discapacidades.

La ceremonia de entrega del premio se realiza en la sede de NN.UU, con la asistencia del Jefe de Estado del país ganador, el Secretario General de la ONU y alrededor de 500 personalidades, dignatarios, embajadores, etc. Consiste en una estatuilla de FDR, 50.000 dólares para ser entregado por el Gobierno a una ONG y mil sillas de ruedas. Los países que han recibido el premio son: Corea del Sur, Canadá, Irlanda, Hungría y Tailandia.

Ecuador es el sexto país y el primero de América Latina en recibir este premio. Se reconoce especialmente el trabajo del CONADIS, y de su presidente señor Rodrigo Crespo Toral.

ICTA LA felicita especialmente a nuestros amigos y colegas ecuatorianos por este merecedor galardón, que reconoce el trabajo desarrollado desde 1989.
