Canada's International Disability Film Festival: June 30 deadline for entries

"Picture This," Canada's second film festival celebrating disability culture, invites entries from around the world, with a deadline of June 30. The Festival will take place in Calgary, October 17-19 and details are available at the festival website: www.picturethisfestival.org

Festival director Vern Reynolds-Braun reports that 115 films were entered last year and that the video-viewing area often had line-ups of people waiting, attracting a total audience of over 500 people. He said, "This seems to indicate that there is an audience for good works on disability and by film makers with disabilities. We were amazed at the wonderful works that so creatively express the disability experience."

Winning entries from the 2001 festival included: "Freak-Out," the half-hour magazine show from Channel 4 in the UK; "Breakaway, A Tale of Two Survivors," a controversial documentary following the triumphs and setbacks, determination and doubts of two men who are brain-injury survivors; and "Kids Just Want to Have Fun," a U.S. short video showing young children with a variety of disabilities talking openly about their lives.
