Colombia Pushes to Ratify the Inter-American Convention
By Hernando Ayala Melgarejo (disnetco@yahoo.com)

Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has committed itself to make an effort and push the legislative process so as to ratify the "Inter American Convention for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against People with Disabilities." That office is trying to draft a bill whereby the country would formalize, by its judicial process, the commitments it assumed as a signatory of the Convention. The Convention was proclaimed in 1999, during the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Guatemala City, by 20 countries in the Americas. The National Care Plan for People with Disabilities is the basis for this process, being developed within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Currently, Colombia is implementing a Prevention and Care for Disabled Persons Policy in a joint effort by the government and the organized civil society.
