NCDE Announces New Issue of A World Awaits You

The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) is pleased to announce the release of the annual issue of A World Awaits You (AWAY). AWAY is a journal describing the successful experiences of individuals with disabilities in various exchange programs including study, volunteer, internship and short-term work abroad.

This issue addresses frequently asked questions and concerns that disabled travelers encounter when venturing on international exchanges. Included are stories about accessibility issues, independently arranged exchanges, professional development programs, as well as a plethora of tips and useful information for both the first time traveler and the more experienced sojourner. In fact, many of the authors in this issue have traveled to several countries and have contributed their acquired knowledge in hopes of encouraging others with disabilities who are considering international exchange for the first time.

Stories in this issue of AWAY include exchange experiences in China, France, Ireland, Russia, Uganda, the United States and more. Readers will also find tips for recruiting disabled youth for international exchanges and how to plan for international visitors with disabilities. Each feature is full of unique ideas and observations gained through the first hand experience of participants. See what participants had to say about their experiences:
"As a result of my semester abroad, I am convinced that with plenty of preparation and attention to one's health, almost any individual with the proper determination can have a successful experience overseas..."
- A student with diabetes studying in China.

"The combination of public agencies, the sentiment of the Irish people and the flexibility of the New York University faculty in Dublin made my first overseas experience successful and rewarding."
- A student who uses a power wheelchair studying abroad in Ireland

"I want to encourage other students from Russia... to take part in exchange programs and not be afraid of new experiences, because it is one of the best ways to develop a strong personality and achieve a better perspective of themselves."
- A Russian student with a physical disability studying in the U.S.
