South Africa Uses Youth Program to Build Accessibility
In March, South Africa's Public Works Minister Stella Sigcau launched the "Youth for Environmental Accessibility Program." Aimed at making all government buildings accessible to people with disabilities, the program is training around 420 youths to build ramps in schools, police stations and hospitals.
The program has so far identified 267 projects in three provinces: Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Province. Sigcau said the program was part of an effort to kick start the establishment of a national youth service in South Africa.
The Eastern Cape premier Makhenkesi Stofile, who also attended the launch, said that disabled people had a role to play in building the nation and should be mobilizing themselves for this purpose.
