Canada's First Disability Film Festival

Calls For Entries by August 31, 2001

"Picture This" is the theme of Canada's first film festival celebrating disability culture. It will take place October 19-21 in Calgary, Alberta and the organizers have announced that the deadline for entries is August 31.

Initiated by Calgary Scope Society, a non profit organization, the festival is being assembled by a team of media enthusiasts under the direction of Vernon Reynolds-Braun. In an email interview, the director stated that the Calgary team is working day and night to line up provocative entries and they are looking forward to recommendations and entries from Disability World readers.

They have purposefully set up a low entry fee of $25 to enable wide participation from all levels of the film and video community. There are two basic categories for entries:
  • Disability culture films about people with disabilities or disability organizations and
  • Films or videos on any topic which have been directed, produced or written by people with disabilities.
The organizers of Picture This were present for the recent California based Superfest International Disability Film Festival and were particularly buoyed by the award earned by a Canadian entry, "Dissonance." The Picture This team is arranging for a Canadian non-profit organization, AudioVision Canada, to produce an audio-described version of the film for its Calgary screening. Dissonance is a 20 minute drama that portrays a blind musician who is looking for love through a voice-based personals service.

Details about the Picture This Festival are available via fax 403 291 4087; email info@picturethisfestival.org ;and on the web at www.picturethisfestival.org
