RI Arab Regional Conference on Disability, Rehabilitation & Inclusion, Beirut, September 2001

The Rehabilitation International Arab Region is hosting its first international conference in Beirut, Lebanon, September 19-21. The theme will be developed through 11 plenary sessions and parallel workshops on the following topics: human rights & legislation; disability research and how it serves disability issues; the role of information technology; the role of governments, inter-governmental agencies and civil society organizations; inclusion of disabled people; health and prevention; the role of the media; vocational rehabilitation in the new century; education and disabled persons; sports and leisure; and disabled women and employment.

Additional workshops and meetings are being arranged by the RI Commissions on Work & Employment; Technology and Accessibility; Organization and Administration; and the Social Commission.

The event is being held at the UNESCO Palace under the High Patronage of His Excellency The President of the Republic of Lebanon, General Emile Lahoud.

The conference is being organized by the National Rehabilitation & Development Center of Lebanon, under the direction of Khaled El Mohtar. Assisting on the organizing committee are representatives of the Lebanon Ministry of Social Affairs, the UN Regional Center (UNESCWA), the Arab Organization of Disabled People, Norwegian Peoples Aid-Lebanon, the Arab NGO Network for Development, the National Union of Parents' Associations and Centers for Intellectually Disabled People, the National Association for the Rights of Disabled People in Lebanon, the Lebanese Welfare Association for Disabled Persons, Imam Al Sadr Foundation, the Lebanese Council of Disabled People, the NGO's Collective in Lebanon, the Lebanese Physically Handicapped Union, First Step Together Association (Fista), the National Institution for Social Care and Training, and Arc en Ciel.

Pre and post-conference tours
Several pre and post-conference tours have been arranged to enable participants to visit the surrounding areas on the coast, the famous Cedars of Lebanon, the Jeita Grotto, and Baalbeck, Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure.
