Journalism and Communication: a contest to promote inclusion on the theme, "A Society for All"

With the purpose of "promoting the creative disposition and the vocation in favor of transformation toward social inclusion of persons with disabilities," several organizations have joined efforts to sponsor this Journalism and Communication Contest: "Education for All."

The objectives of this Contest is to promote ideas for building a society through "creative journalism and communication efforts, including aspects such as, journalism and communication content constructs that strengthen the fulfillment of the right of freedom of expression, free press, and the right to information" as contributing factors.

Contest organizers are looking for initiatives "fostering all forms of actual inclusion among imaginary collectives and the use of language in the production of journalist and communication messages dealing with disability, aging and old age, and improved treatment to such persons."

This is a Contest organized by the Information and Distribution Proyect on Disability, Aging, and Old Age and the Prevention of Violence in the Family-Disnnet Press Journalism Digital Network (Proyecto de información y divulgación sobre Discapacidad, Envejecimiento y vejez, y Prevención del Maltrato Intrafamiliar en Colombia - Red Digital de Periodismo Disnnet Press), integrated by the Alliance of Cooperation (Ascopar), Human Capital (Capital Humano), the Latin American Group for the Participation, Integration, and the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (Grupo Latinoamericano para la Participación, la Integración y la Inclusión de Personas con Discapacidad, GLARP IIPD), the Corporation for the Social Development of Colombia (Corporación para el Desarrollo Social de Colombia, CODESCOL), TELETON, and the Ministry of Communications of Coloimbia (Ministerio de Comunicaciones de Colombia), through the Communications Fund of the Executive Secretariat of the Andrés Bello Covenant (Convenio Fondo de Comunicaciones Secretaría Ejecutiva del Convenio Andrés Bello.

The Contest has the same orientation of the United Nations challenge "A Society for All by the Year 2010. The organizing bodies consider that: "the task of transforming present reality, aiming to achieve of equity and participation without exclusion, is also the task of those who have the responsibility of informing."

Also, the "Society for All Journalism and Communication Contest" is an invitation from Colombia aimed at improving the exercise of journalism within a full commitment toward the right to information.
Contest requirements
  1. There are two areas of participations: Journalism and communication. The works from all countries will be accepted.
  2. The topics are the following: Disability. Aging and Old Age. Good Treatment.
  3. Area of Journalism: Written press, printed or digital, radio, and television participations will be accepted. These participations may be unedited or published between July 1, 2001 to September 20, 2002. They may be in the form of chronicles, reports, profiles or analytic articles.
  4. Area of communication: Contributions may be of diverse form, all dealing with content and messages pertaining to disability, aging and old age, good treatment of persons, presented as public campaigns (governmental, civic society or private publicity, including radio spots, commercial videos, video clips) or communication strategies, un edited or published between July 1, 2002 to September 20, 2002.
  5. The Contest will award one winner in each area: Best Work in Journalism and Best Work in Communication.
  6. The Contest will award a Special Recognition to:
    1. The best contributions nominated in each area: Journalism and/or Communication.
    2. The best contribution in each topic: Disability, Aging and Old Age. Good Treatment.
    3. The best contribution in Press (printed or digital), Radio and Television.

The works must be presented to the Contest before Octber 20, 2002, the closing date. The must be sent by Postal Mail, post marked at or before the closing date, personal delivered or by e-mail (this is optional for non digital works):

Presentation: Original and only copy on the corresponding format
Printed press
Press media or magnetic media. They may be sent by postal mail and in physical form.
Radio:
Audio Cassette or CD. Radio scripts may be submitted in the same forms. Opción válida libreto escrito para Radio.
Television:
Videocasete VHS o Betacam SP and NTSC. Scripts, presentations and story board, and printouts may be sent by mail and e-mail.
Communication works:
Printed, audiovisual, audio or multimedia.
Participants must send personal information: Human and academic profile, Curriculum Vitae. Name, address, telephone, e-mail.

Awards
The selection of candidates will be defined by a Jury integrated by the participating agencies organizing this project alliance. The organizers will appoint a Jury, compose of expert journalists presided by Javier Darío Restrepo, head of the Disnet Press process. This Jury has the responsibility of defining the nominees and the winners.

Each Winner in the Journalism and Communication Areas will receive a trophy, a mention and the amount of US $ 1.000.

The best works submitted in the topics of the Contest (disability, aging and old age, and good treatment), will received a recognition.

The Contest will publish the best ten works selected. This publication will be made in the form of a printed book and a digital book which will be posted at the Internet options related with the project and will be offered to specialized projects in the fields of journalism and communication in academic settings.
