Recent Research on Employment of Disabled Persons in Canada
A recent study conducted by the Canadian Council on Social Development showed that employees with disabilities are less likely to receive formal training on the job and are less likely to be promoted than their non-disabled co-workers. Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities (COSD)
Funded primarily through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), COSD's mission is to increase the career employment opportunities for college graduates with disabilities. A consortium now totaling over 330 member entities, COSD includes universities such as UC Berkeley, University of Washington, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, San Jose State, University of Arkansas, New Mexico State and Columbia. Prominent employers and agencies include Microsoft, Motorola, HP, Merck, Nordstrom, JP Morgan Chase, Procter & Gamble, Exxon Mobil, NASA and National Institutes of Health. Company hires disabled people to provide access solutions to clients
TecAccess is a small woman-owned for-profit company that provides Accessibility and Section 508 solutions. Offering comprehensive services that enable its clients to understand, acquire, and deliver accessible solutions including Independent Accessibility Testing for Section 508, Section 255, and other Accessibility Acts and Legislation, the majority of TecAccess associates are persons with disabilities. Started by a woman who has a daughter who has Downs Syndrome, because she believed her daughter would have difficulty finding employment when she became older, she established a company that hires persons with disabilities and that simultaneously helps Electronic and Information Technology (E&IT) to become accessible to others with disabilities.
