International Dialogue on Disability & Governance

A four hour exchange of information and experience on the growing phenomenon of disability policy being effected at high levels of government will be held within the Rehabilitation International African Regional Conference, taking place in Durban, South Africa, October 1-3.

The session is entitled "Disability & Governance" and will take place on October 2, 14:00-18:00 at the International Convention Center close to the Durban coast. It will examine two specific developments: the effect of the election or appointment of disabled individuals to high positions in government; and the creation of high level disability policy offices or agencies within government and how they actually work. Most of the speakers for the session will be from the African region as in recent years there have been signifcant numbers of disabled Africans elected to parliaments or appointed as ministers.

The session is being organized by the World Institute on Disability as part of itsū International Disability Exchanges and Studies (IDEAS) project, funded by the U.S. National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research. IDEAS Project Director Kathy Martinez is organizing the session with the assistance of William Rowland, one of the pioneers of the disability rights movement in South Africa and a reporter for the online IDEAS periodical, www.disabilityworld.org.

Details about the "Disability & Governance" session are available from Kathy Martinez via email: kathy@wid.org.
