Invitation for a Worldwide Photo Contest: "Participation for all?"
Rehabilitation International Norway invites all photographers around the world to participate in a photo contest under the theme "Participation for all?". The photo contest is a part of the cultural program for Rehabilitation International's 20th World Congress in Oslo in 2004.
Basic human rights are still routinely denied to entire sectors of the world's population, including many of the estimated 600 million children, women and men who have disabilities. We seek a world where equal opportunities for disabled people becomes a natural consequence of enlightened policies and legislation supporting full inclusion in, and access to all aspects of society.
We want to challenge photographers through out the world to use their camera to document how the society succeeds with inclusion and access for all citizens. Or how ignorance and attitudes still makes barriers that exclude people because of their physical or mental impairment.
Rehabilitation International (RI) is an interdisciplinary world organisation working to improve the quality of life for disabled citizens. Rehabilitation International has had consultative status with the UN since the 1950's, regularly carries out collaborative projects with ILO, UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO, the Commission on Human Rights and other UN agencies and follows meetings of the General Assembly when dealing with disability issues.
RI has since 1929 organised quadrennial World Congresses within the field of rehabilitation. More than 2000 participants will attend RI's 20th World Congress in Oslo-Norway 21-24 June 2004. The main topic for the Congress will be Rethinking Rehabilitation.
The 20 best photos will be awarded and exhibited on several sites in Oslo and on the internet, in connection with the World Congress. The general public will choose three photos among the 20 to be the winners of the public prize.
