Website Offers Free Training in Computer Solutions for Students with Disabilities
Buffalo, NY, USA, September 4, 2001 -- A new site, Assistive Technology Training Online (ATTO), offers free, online training in assistive technology solutions to help students with disabilities. The site, at http://at-training.com, consists of "virtual workshops" targeted to teachers, parents, and assistive technology service providers who serve elementary-level students.
"Assistive Technology" consists of tools and strategies to help give students with disabilities access to the general curriculum. ATTO addresses all types of disabilities, focusing specifically on computer software and hardware solutions for the classroom. For students with disabilities, computer technology used with assistive devices (such as special keyboards, switches, pointing systems, and text-to-speech software) frequently provides the only means to accessing educational technology.
Susan Mistrett, at the Center for Assistive Technology at the University at Buffalo, directs the project. "For children with disabilities in public school classrooms, assistive technologies are their tools to extend their physical, social and communicative abilities", says Mistrett. "However, unless their parents, teachers, and service providers are trained, the effective use of assistive technology and its potential will remain unused." ATTO's training modules and tutorials describe step-by-step "how-to" guides, current products on the market, examples of real-life uses, and explanations of federal laws and legislation.
ATTO can be accessed at http://at-training.com. ATTO's primary funding source is the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, US Department of Education under the Research and Innovation to Improve Services and Results for Children with Disabilities Model Demonstration Projects (CDFA 84.324M).
