ICCHP '02 8th ICCHP - International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs
Organised by the University of Linz and the Austrian Computer Society
15 - 20 July 2002
University of Linz, Austria
http://www.aib.uni-linz.ac.at/icchp

"The Conference's mission is to make the Information Society accessible and usable for all and that special needs and abilities of all are taken into account. Come and get involved!"
--Harry J. Murphy, General Chair of ICCHP 2002
Welcome:
The ICCHP conferences focus on all aspects of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for people with disabilities and elderly people. ICT is revolutionising our world and is being integrated into almost all aspects of our lives. Accessibility of these systems for people with special needs is already recognised as a democratic necessity and is becoming a key issue in the information society for all.

ICCHP focuses on all aspects of Human Computer Interaction and the usage of ICT for people with special needs. Assistive devices, accessibility and usability of ICT based systems as well as special systems for people with disabilities will be discussed. Implications for the quality of life and for society in general should enable a holistic approach. This orientation towards practice leads to an interdisciplinary exchange symbolized by the ICCHP-cube and invites all disciplines working in this field to take part and to discuss their ideas, approaches and results.

ICCHP offers a unique platform for outstanding researchers, practitioners and experts from around the world to present their work and experiences in papers, short papers and posters. Additionally specialists are invited to set up, organize and chair Specific Thematic Sessions (STS) independently within the thematic framework of the conference. At least three members of the international programme committee will review each contribution. Accepted contributions will be published in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science.

ICCHP wants to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and the interaction between science, research and practice. In order to bring the outstanding presentations to a bigger audience people are invited to take part at a very low participation fee. Facilities for project, association and other meetings will be provided. Exhibitors are invited to present their products or projects for free and to run product and project seminars.

Please note! The Austrian Computer Society announces:
EUROPEAN COMPUTERS HELPING PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AWARD
This award will be given for the first time at ICCHP 2002 to a distinguished professional who has rendered outstanding service in the area of technology and disability. Information and a nomination form:
http://www.aib.uni-linz.ac.at/icchp/award.html

Conference Topics
The conference by its nature has a wide area of topics involved and any list would be incomplete. Therefore the topics are outlined by the ICCHP cube. It demonstrates the problems associated with information technology fo r people with special needs in the areas of communication, medicine, environment, and assistive-technology and their relationship to educational, psychological, sociological and legal fields. To meet the concrete demands of people with special needs general topics are defined as follows:

Accessible Communication and Information
means removing barriers and to make accessible the world of communication, interaction and co-operation to/by/with people with special needs. Information technology has to respect the needs of all users and work out progr ams, tools and configurations to avoid, to overcome or even to prevent barriers.

Designing the Environment for All
means free and open access in living, working, and communicating for people with special needs. Traffic, public buildings, work stations and surroundings should fit with these aims. Programs on mobility training and archi tectural community conceptions are invited to be presented. Education and training as well as accessibility at the job will be another important issue.

Medicine
means to encourage medical scientists and practitioners to define the necessary technical research and development for the support of people with special needs and to describe undesirable technical developments and trends . Moreover, perspectives of computer-supported diagnostics, home care, therapy and training and rehabilitation are valid topics.

Assistive Technology
means that information technology itself is one important tool to support the integration of people with special needs into society and business. In addition, the development of useful special tools depends on reflection and invention of theoretical and visionary aspects of rehabilitation technology. Therefore, paper submissions dealing with research and theory activities in concepts, designs and implementations are highly encouraged.

IT in Special and Inclusive Education
focuses on all aspects of the application of IT at all levels of training and teaching. IT offers a lot of new opportunities for the integration of people with disabilities but also increases the complexity of educationa l processes due fast changes in technology. Specialists in the field are invited to contribute papers discussing pedagogical, technical as well as social aspects of this important field.

Conference Design
Organize Your Own Special Thematic Sessions (STS)
ICCHP'02 offers the opportunity to organize special thematic sessions concentrating on very specific aspects of conference topics. This should help to present a more comprehensive view to these fields. Contributions will be integrated into the conference programme as well as into the proceedings in dedicated tracks. Experts willing to organize and chair a special sessions and to invite their own speaker group are invited to do so. A small budget may be provided for this purpose and a special section of the proceedings including an in troduction by the chair will recognize these contributions.

Special session such like these must be proposed and approved not later than December 15 2001. For more information please refer on the rules for thematic sessions at http://www.aib.uni-linz.ac.at/icchp/sts.html

Papers, Short Papers and Posters
The Conference will be concentrated on topics according to the range of submitted papers (8 pages), short papers (3 pages) and posters (2 pages) and in order to support an interdisciplinary discussion.

The programme committee will group contributions into parallel tracks concentrating on thematic areas. A time slot of 20 to 40 (papers) or 5 to 10 minutes (short papers) will be provided for presentation and discussion of contributions. Posters will be presented in a special poster room and discussed in dedicated poster sessions.

Tutorials and Seminars
The Pre-Conference with introductory seminars and tutorials offers a platform of half a day sessions for presentations, research programs, scientific activities and practice in order to enable multifunctional and interdis ciplinary discussions. Specialists are invited to organize and run tutorials and seminars.

Project Meetings and Presentations
In order to bring a bigger audience to the outstanding presentations ICCHP provides facilities (presentations tools, drinks, buffet, ..) for meetings of project consortia, associations and other organisations at a very lo w price. A special discount on the participation fee in the conference will be provided for these participants. Meetings and presentations can be held during the entire conference; we recommend the pre-conference or eveni ng sessions. A special area in the exhibition will also be provided for project presentations. ICCHP therefore is an ideal meeting place for projects, consortia, associations, ... Run your meeting within the framework of ICCHP in order to better meet the needs of your members. http://www.aib.uni-linz.ac.at/icchp02/meetings.html

Product and Project Exhibition
Exhibitors are welcome to present their products and projects for free. Only direct costs to provide the facilities needed to run a stand will be charged. Free access to the exhibits is available to all participants as we ll as to the public.

In addition to standard product and poster presentations at stands, ICCHP invites exhibitors to run introductory seminars and product presentations throughout the ICCHP event. Special evening sessions and pre-conference s essions are recommended for this purpose. Facilities to organize representative events (presentation tools, a computer room with up to 30 workstations, buffet, drinks, ...) will be organized at a very low price. A specia l "Call for Exhibition" will be published at the end of the year 2001: http://www.aib.uni-linz.ac.at/icchp02/exhibition.html
