Students in Argentina Invent New Braille Conversion Software
Four students at the Coronel Brandsen Technical School near Buenos Aires, Argentina have developed a software system that allows one to write text in different languages, print them, and convert it to Braille as part of an educational project. It recognizes Spanish, French and English and also allows for translation of pages on the Internet.
Although this is not the first invention of its kind, it is the first one to be developed in Argentina. A similar software package is available in Holland, but at a much higher cost. It is now available at the Braille Library in Buenos Aires. The motive for such a project was to learn the creation process as well as to develop a social service available for use. The students who created it intend to develop their project further in the future by adding a voice recognition component.
