Spain: Resolution calls for replacing the term mental retardation with intellectual disability
By Digital Solidarity (Solidaridad Digital), September 3, 2002 - Number 535, DIGITAL DISNNET PRESS AGENCY

The Spanish Conferation for Persons with Mental Retardation (La Confederación Española de Organizaciones en Favor de las Personas con Retraso Mental, FEAPS), has unanimously approved a resolution substituting the expression "mental retardtion" for "intellectual disability". The first change means that the confederation is now called: Spanish Confederation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (Confederación Española de Organizaciones en favor de Personas con Discapacidad Intelectual).

This organization has also approved a new four-year Strategic Plan to improve the quality of life, institutional support, and inclusion efforts for persons with intellectual disability.
