Disability News Websites

After a long trip or vacation, visiting some news sites to see what's happening is a great way to get back up to speed. Here are a few favorites, selected for their frequency of updates, broad scopes and cost-free availability.
- Ouch
- A good mix of mainstream news, insider reporting, humor and in-depth features. Focus is mostly Britain but they try to keep an eye on European and North American developments as well.
- Yahoo
- This one is harder to locate than it should be and isn't updated more than fortnightly, but the U.S. mainstream news coverage is hard to beat. Covers radio shows, videos and newspaper news, features and editorials.
- EDF, then click on en/news/latest/htm
- Round-up of European level developments ranging from resolutions to studies to events from the point of view of the European Disability Forum
- iCan, www.halftheplanet.com and www.nod.org
- provide quick snapshots of news important to the U.S. disability rights movement, following important court cases, rallies & demonstrations, studies, awards and other developments. Plus you can sign up for free e-newsletters.
- DPI
- Recently, Disabled Peoples International has upgraded its website and news operation to include a weekly worldwide update of news, papers and events, a newsletter devoted to the UN Disability Convention and an extensive listing of resources.
Updated less frequently, but still worth a monthly visit are: www.disabilitynews.infoxchange.net.au for what's going on in Australia, www.independentliving.org for an international report from Sweden on conferences, papers and resources supporting all aspects of independent living, and www.abilities.ca for an overview of all things Canadian.
Finally, check out http://dag.virtualave.net that hosts discussions and posts a cornucopia of papers and commentaries on Community Based Rehabilitation and associated developing country projects.
