Samoa: In-depth Report on Situation of Disabled Women
A major research report on the situation of women with disabilities in Samoa has just been issued by UNESCO, the Inailau Women's Leadership Network and Inclusion International. Based on the disaggregation of data from national surveys, and supplemented by a series of interviews by Donna Lene, the report finds that disabled women are at serious socio-economic disadvantage compared to disabled men. For example, although labor participation by disabled men is quite low, at least half the population of women with disabilities reported having activity only with their families and another 39% reported no activity. There was also disturbing information about the lack of education and awareness of the women interviewed: one deaf woman said, "AIDS, what's that? Nobody told me about that..."
