Global Perspectives on Independent Living: Second International Summit Conference

The Global Perspectives on Independent Living: Second International Summit Conference will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, December 4-6, 2000. This conference is intended as a unique opportunity for networking, education, and leadership development among leaders of the disability movement from around the world.

The conference is aimed at increasing stability and functional capacity among the global network of independent living movement world leaders. This meeting will also provide world leaders who are active in self help groups of people with disabilities with new information and ideas to help them "lead on" in the new millennium.

Meeting goals are:
To provide a chance to find out about international peer support programs, and to share and learn from one another about the best approaches and practices to facilitate human and civil rights, employment, community living and education of individuals with significant disabilities.

To discuss the dynamics of a strategic plan for inclusion of people with disabilities into policy and decision making processes at local, national, regional and international levels.

To make the international bond of world leaders in independent living stronger through the use of internet technology.

The conference is being organized by the Japan Council on Independent Living Centers (JIL) and Independent Living Resource Utilization (ILRU) in Houston, Texas. The local host will be the Hawaii Centers for Independent Living (HCIL). Conference sponsors are the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, The Mitsubishi Bank Foundation (Japan), The Kirin Foundation (Japan), and the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, U.S. Department of Education.
