European Conference on Employment & Disability Held in Brussels, December 2001

More than 100 participants attended this event, timed to just follow the European activities for International Day of Disabled People on December 3. The purpose of the conference was to identify and highlight best practices and gaps, with the aim of identifying ways to strengthen national action plans of European Union member states.

The conference was a main event of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, a post that rotates every six months. Five themes were developed in plenary sessions: anti-discrimination legislation in the field of employment and exchange of best practices regarding national legislation; analysis of the integration of disabled people in the workplace within the 15 member states; analysis of current measures to support families of disabled people; analysis of practices concerning job retention and how best to help disabled persons retain their jobs after becoming disabled; and how to make income protection more employment-friendly, with associated analysis of the impact when disabled people enter the labor market.

Conclusions in English and French are available on the website of the Belgian Cabinet of Social Affairs: www.vanderbroucke.fgov.be/2/Zbijlage0112051.htm
