Rape of Deaf Woman Provokes Protest in Bangladesh
An unprecedented protest by more than 800 disabled Bangladeshis and thousands more of their allies took place following a refusal by police to investigate the rape of a deaf woman. The protest was held on August 20 in Kushtia in central Bangladesh, following a week of negotiations between the deaf woman, her family and representatives of the police who declined to register the case.
Those interviewed for an article about the situation, featured in Britain's Independent newspaper on 18 December, included the deaf woman, who stated that this outpouring of community support was one of the first positive developments in her life; a colleague disabled by polio, who explained that it took courage to stand against the alleged perpetrator as he was a known and feared local criminal, and one of the protest's organizers who described the response as evidence that Bangladesh's disabled population was now getting organized to challenge inequities.
