National Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport Enacted in Australia
National Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport went into effect on October 23, 2002 in Australia and require access to new public structures, pedestrian facilities, and transport vehicles as well as provide a timetable for making existing facilities and vehicles accessible. The new standards include detailed requirements regarding access paths, ramps and boarding devices, allocation of spaces on buses and trains, handrails, doorways, controls, symbols and signs, fares, providing information, etc. The standards are available online at http://www.law.gov.au?DSFAPT/Welcome.html.
New Publication by the Council of Europe: rehabilitation and integration of people with disabilities: policy and legislation
The Council of Europe recently published the report, "Rehabilitation and integration of people with disabilities: policy and legislation." This compendium of policy and legislation in force in eleven member or observer states of the Partial Agreement in the Social and Public Health Fields may be a useful tool for everyone interested in the rehabilitation and integration of people with disabilities. The publication describes current national situations in the fields of disability prevention; identification and diagnosis; treatment and therapeutic aids; education; vocational guidance and training; employment; social integration and environment; social, economic and legal protection; training of stakeholders; information, statistics and research. The report covers Austria, Belgium, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom and makes it possible to identify the achievements as well as the shortcomings of national disability policies and to follow new trends.
