Peru promotes Human Rights in Mental Health and Disability

Last October 23 the Peruvian University Cayetano de Heredia (Universidad Cayetano Heredia del Perú) conducted an International Seminar: "Promoting Human Rights in Mental Health and Disability (Promoviendo los Derechos Humanos en Salud Mental y Discapacidad).
This activity was part of the activities organized during the visit of a mission of Mental Rights Disability International, MDRI (Organización Internacional sobre los Derecho en Discapacidad Mental), which came to Perú to promote the compliance of human rights for persons with mental disabilities.
Liliana Peñaherrera, one of the organizers of this event, told us: "Human Rights for persons with mental disabilities has long been a missing topic in government policies and even in the discourse of the organizations of persons with disabilities and their families".
The visiting MDRI mission gathered a group of persons with disabilities and the families at Hospital Larco Herrera. There was a good opportunities for participants to share ideas and feelings.
This participatory event was held on October 19 and the MDRI mission had chance to become acquainted with this situation of persons with disabilities, particularly of those presenting mental disabilities, in Peru. There were many testimonials including one of a participant saying: "We hope that these efforts will serve the authorities of the Peruvian government and our civilian society to work effectively on ways to comply with he international treaties and conventions pertaining to Human Rights in health and disability, particularly, equality, accessibility, and quality of life."
