Guatemala: Human Rights for Persons with Disabilities Promoted
By Luis Fernando Astorga Gatjens, IID (lferag@racsa.co.cr), based on information from Gabriela de Burbano, ASCATED

The Association for Training and Technical Assistance on Education and Disability (Asociación de Capacitación y Asistencia Técnica en Educación y Discapacidad,) ASCATED), has been working very hard to convince Guatemalan authorities about the needs and benefits of committing with the United Nations Standard Rules of 1993. Their efforts have also been directed at the inclusion of disabled students as part of the new educational reform plans in Guatemala.

Together with other disability related organizations, ASCATED participated in a recently published study on sex abuse against boys and girls with disabilities in Guatemala.

As one of the results of this effort, ASCATED is elaborating a Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Abuse Against Children with Disabilities (Guía de prevención del abuso sexual de niños y jóvenes con discapacidad) for teachers and parents and an Unifiied Criteria for the Diagnosis, Identification, and Registation of Cases of Abuse at Hospitals and Day Care Centers (Guía de unificación de criterios de diagnóstico, identificación, y registro de casos en hospitales y centros de cuidado diario).
