Disability Advocates Demand a Society for All in Argentina

Based on information from La Nación, Argentina

Murals, events, and demands characterized the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Argentina.

The Cilsa organization inaugurated a mural at the Buenos Aires Zoo, painted by children with the slogan "Caring by caring" (in Spanish: Cuidar cuidando), and guided tours were organized. The Workers Union of Argentina organized a public meeting demanding "respect and compliance with the rights of persons with disabilities".

Father Pablo Molero, of Foro-Pro, an organization comprising several associations, said yesterday that: "people with disabilities have been working on their own social inclusion and they are still far from being allowed the equal opportunities we all need and are entitle to."

He also added: "We want growth and development for every person, beyond deficiencies and limitations. They all must be the subject of rights and the subjects of global building, the pursuit of happiness, and the right to love and be loved." Father Pablo Molero also mentioned pending urgent challenges, including accessibility of public transportation and support from social initiatives.

The World Health Organization emphasized the need for governments to promote the rights of persons with disabilities, to foster accessible health and rehabilitation services, and full participation in society. There are 600 million persons with disabilities and they and their families find difficulties living ordinary lives.
