Photography Competition: Images of Communication
About the Competition
The competition will be held annually, 2004 is the first year it will be held. Closing date is March 1st 2004 Entries received after this date will not be considered.
Prizes
There will be one overall winner, and prizes for three highly commended photographers. The prizes will be: 1st Prize: $750, Commendations: $250 each A selection of entries will be exhibited initially in London and form part of a mobile exhibition which will travel internationally. A selection of entries will be used in the WACC publications Media Development, Action, Media & Gender Monitor and on the WACC website. Press releases will be sent to the Press, galleries, and magazines worldwide.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all men, women and children, of all ages and from all countries. Entries from amateurs and professionals are welcome. There is no limit to the number of photographs that a person may enter. Each entry will be judged separately, but no entrant may win more than one prize in the contest.
The theme of the competition is Communication
We are looking for visual interpretation of current communication issues You may consider the following areas which are not limiting.
- Mass media and alternative media: people reporting, broadcasting, publishing; people as passive or active recipients of mass media
- Media and conflict
- Communication and HIV/AIDS, combating stigma and discrimination
- Media and Gender
Judging
A panel of judges, including WACC staff and Adrian Evans, director of PANOS Pictures, will select the winners as well as the photos for the exhibition. All decisions by the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into. All winners will be contacted immediately after the results of the competition have been announced.
Format for entries
Photographs may be submitted in color or black and white. Entries can be submitted as print or digital files. Prints must be no larger than A4 (210 x 299 mm) and unmounted. Digital files must be supplied in TIFF or JPEG format on floppy disk, CD or zip drive cartridge, preferably accompanied by a print-out. High resolution images are preferable (300dpi) though lower resolution images are acceptable. You may also send digital files by e-mail.
Labelling - contact details and caption. Your name and address must be attatched to every item. All entries must also include a caption, a paragraph of approximately 50 words explaining why the photograph is significant and giving details of what it shows
Return of entries
Return packaging, of suitable size, must be enclosed if you would like your submission returned. Entries not returned will be destroyed 6 months after the closing date. All submissions are made entirely at the submitter's own risk, WACC does not accept liability for lost or damaged photographs. Do not submit original film which is irreplaceable or of high commercial or personal value.
Copyright
By entering this competition you a) acknowledge that you hold full copyright to the images and b) authorise the reproduction by WACC, without payment, of submissions in whatever medium may be required. The photographer will be credited on all materials reproduced. No other rights will be conceded to sponsors or other parties without permission of the authors.
