Campaign to Promote the Visibility of Disabled Women in the UN Convention
Since 2002 the United Nation Member States are negotiating "A Comprehensive and Integral Convention on Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities." Although the human rights of persons with disabilities are fairly well respected in the actual draft, the gender perspective is missing throughout most of the document. The special needs of and the particular types of discrimination experienced by women with disabilities are hardly mentioned or referenced.
Therefore, to make States, Parties and society in general conscious about the particular types of discrimination experienced by women with disabilities and to report about their situation, it is critical to include the gender perspective. Furthermore, the existing Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is not sufficient on this point as it does not have a disability perspective, and States Parties of CEDAW are not obliged to report on the situation of disabled women.
