Employment:

Citizenship Gas Station

Jaime Gonçalo Filho is owner of eight gas stations in São Paulo, Brazil. One of his managers became paraplegic. Although he continued managing the business, he felt uncomfortable not being able to function with the same agility as before. Jaime then decided to set up an accessible station for employees with physical disabilities (the first of its kind in Latin America). On March 13, the Gas Station "Petrosul Def& ef" was launched, with 14 disabled employees. "We don't only work with computers; seated in a wheelchair we can do many other things as well", said one of the paraplegic attendants, Roberto Soares da Silva, who until then had never had a work contract. Gonçalo Filho stated that he hopes this experience serves as example for other similar initiatives: " The cost is the same and it opens more work positions for people with disabilities", he concludes.
