International Cooperation: Movimondo and people with disabilities in Nicaragua
 

MOVIMONDO Molisv, is an Italian NGO that has worked in Nicaragua since 1984 by helping the most vulnerable sectors of the population. It has also contributed to improving living conditions, making it possible for people to become active in the community, and promoting dialogue and reconciliation.

One of the social groups that is being helped by MOVIMONDO Molisv is people with disabilities, especially those resulting from war. MOVIMONDO Molisv's goal for the disabled is holistic rehabilitation encouraging positive and long term changes in life and health in individuals, organizations and in the society as a whole.

Through long interventions during recent years, MOVIMONDO Molisv has developed a novel model of technical cooperation and help towards development that has surpassed all traditional models of top to bottom cooperation. Also, it has developed an "approach to disability" which has been applied successfully in both rural and urban areas. It has been able to improve its approach on the go and it has received feedback from past experiences. It has transferred its experiences from one municipality to the next, and has even shared the acquired experience with other countries.

Counterpart to the projects MOVIMONDO Molisv has developed are the Organizations of People with Disabilities. Projects promote the Organization's Programme Goals and the Basic Strategies, and they are: self-supporting actions, coordination between areas, use of local resources, recovery of human dignity, and reconciliation and integration among groups. The specific interventions carried out up until now have been: physical rehabilitation and, access to alternative modes of assistance, technical cooperation in health, human rights, small business development, small business financing, job placement, human rights promotion in disability issues, cultural and sports activities.
