Conference on Constructing Law & Disability
December 4-5, Australian National University

A conference on "Constructing Law & Disability," with keynotes by internationally acclaimed disability scholars from the U.K., Canada and Australia, will be held December 4-5 at the Australian National University in Sydney. Keynotes include Marian Corker from Kings College, University of London and Michael Bach, Director of Research, Roeher Institute, Canada.

The aim of the conference is "to explore the role of law in achieving justices for people with disabilities by considering issues such as the impact of different conceptualizations of disability on law and the role and function of law in dealing with a range of matters of concern to people with disabilities, their families and policy makers."

The conference is being hosted by the Humanities Research Center, Australian National University; School of Law and Legal Studies, La Trobe University; and Faculty of Law, University of New South Wales.

Call for Papers for Gender & Disability Conference,
March 2001, Rutgers University, USA

December 1 is the deadline for proposals for individual presentations and panels for a conference on Gender and Disability Studies, being planned by the Institute for Research on Women, Rutgers University.  The conference will take place March 2-3, 2001.

Featured speakers so far include disability scholars Adrienne Asch and Rosemary Garland Thomson.  The conference proposes "to investigate the ways in which disability and gender are related in the social, cultural, political and economic framing of human variation."

Conference organizers invite proposals for 20 minute presentations or for entire panels "covering local or global aspects of disability in a gendered perspective and welcome presentations in the arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences."

Call for Abstracts & Proposals: 2001 SDS Conference
on "Democracy, Diversity & Disability,"
Winnipeg, Canada

December 15 is the deadline for submissions for the scientific program of the Society for Disability Studies 2001 Conference, taking place June 21-24 in Winnipeg, Canada. Taking place for the first time outside the USA, the SDS annual conference is being hosted by the Canadian Center on Disability Studies (CCDS).

The program organizers are Henry Enns, director of the CCDS, and Karen Hirsch, SDS Board Member. SDS is an international nonprofit organization that promotes the exploration of disability through research, artistic production and teaching.

Submissions solicited are: abstracts for individual papers & presentations (15 minutes), panels, roundtable or performances. Submissions should address the theme, taking into consideration the following topics: disability & culture, disability & politics, disability studies & research methods and disability studies & universal design.

Each plenary session will have an international focus and the breakout sessions are expected to represent different parts of the world, a variety of disability organizations and a broad range of academic disciplines. Details available via email from ccds@escape.ca
