Invitation for Asia/Pacific Entries for ESCAP "Empowerment Awards"

To encourage the further empowerment of people with disabilities in the region, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) has established a $30,000 award for project proposals in this area of work.

Proposals of no more than 5 pages should be sent by November 30 to: Chief, Human Resources Section, Social Development Division, ESCAP, UN Building, Rajdamnern Ave., Bangkok 10200, Thailand or fax 662 288 3031.

Information about the competition and proposal requirements is available on the following website: www.escap-hrd.org but note, that no applications will be accepted via electronic mail.

The award has been made possible by the Government of Japan and the winner will be invited to Bangkok to receive the award in a ceremony around April 2001.

Resident national and organizations in the ESCAP region are eligible and the complete list of countries and areas included is available from ESCAP and can also be found on its website.

In general, organizations and individuals involved with the following human resource development aspects of empowerment of people with disabilities may apply:

• Access to education & training, information & technology
• Support for self-help development
• Creating accessible environments
• Promotion of positive attitudes & practices
• Access to health services by disabled persons living in poverty
