Electronic Literacy Journal Invites Disability-Related Submissions

Currents in Electronic Literacy (ISSN 1524-6493)is now accepting submissions for its Spring 2001 issue, which will focus on Disability Studies and Accessibility issues. Completed articles are due on November 1, 2000.

Disability studies is an emerging area of interdisciplinary investigation which calls attention to the important implications of our interest in the intersections of technology with literary and cultural studies, rhetoric and composition, and teaching. Although we are interested in articles on all aspects of disability studies, we are particularly interested in the way that the rapidly expanding interest in multimedia raises important issues of access and participation for students and faculty who have disabilities, and in the way that electronic media construes or effaces questions of disability and the abled or disabled body. Although our focus for this issue will be disability studies and accessibility issues, we will also consider submissions on any aspect of electronic literacy for the Spring 2001 issue.

Currents is an electronic journal for the scholarly discussion of issue pertaining to electronic literacy, widely construed. We seek to publish work addressing the use of electronic texts and technologies in reading, writing, teaching, and learning in fields including but not restricted to: literature (in English and in other languages), rhetoric and composition, languages (English, foreign, or ESL), communications, media studies, and education. Currents is published by the Computer Writing and Research Lab of the Division of Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Texas at Austin. The e-journal is published twice annually (spring and fall), and replaces Computer Writing, Rhetoric, and Literature as the official e-journal of the CWRL.

We are especially interested in work that takes advantage of the hypertext possibilities afforded by our World Wide Web publication format, as well as in articles concerning the use of emergent electronic technologies. To this end, we gladly accept articles with graphics, sound, and hyperlinks submitted as HTML documents. We ask, however, that such submissions take into account reader-access issues, and that they routinely incorporate such accommodations as the inclusion of tags in any image and the use of content tags (e.g., citation and emphasis tags) instead of the corresponding physical markup tags (e.g., italics and bold tags) whenever possible.

We are also pleased to publish essays in more traditional formats. Please submit these essays either in HTML format, Word 97/98 format, or Rich Text Format (RTF). We accept electronic submissions by email at ejournal@lists.cwrl.utexas.edu as well as on 3.5" floppy or Zip by post at:
